A New Community Tradition
The First Annual Hayden Homes Bend Summer Comp

Bend, Oregon, 7/26/2016 - On June 24th and 25th, Top competitive climbers in North America visited Bend, Oregon to showcase their talent at the Bend Summer Comp. The bouldering event was a part of the Subaru of Bend Outside Games and was produced by and benefitted the Bend Endurance Academy. The priorities were to generate national level interest, re-introduce climbers to our area, and raise the bar for a grass roots bouldering competition. Central Oregon delivered with community involvement and full capacity crowd cheering athletes on!

Organizers approached EP to help build an additional anchor to the week-long Subaru of Bend Outside Games. With time running short, Hayden Homes stepped up to become the underwriting title sponsor; followed by additional donations to get everything underway just 60 days in front of the competition date. EP was all hands on deck to design and engineer a safe 16ft tall by 48ft wide field of play as well as provide materials, shop space, and equipment to get the walls built. Under EP’s lead and direction, volunteers rallied to get everything pre-built, walls raised on-site, and ready for climbing.

“This is an accomplishment we all wanted to see happen. Sport climbing started here at Smith Rock. We wanted to continue that tradition with an outdoor bouldering competition welcoming the next generation of climbers along with supporting the other activities we enjoy here ... in essence what the Subaru of Bend Outside Games are all about” - Jim Gross, Subaru of Bend Outside Games

“I’m really excited to see a bouldering competition like this in Bend” says Bend Endurance Academy Climbing Program Director, Mike Rougeux. “I’ve always thought Bend would be a great place for an event like this. The climbing community really came together to make it all happen. It was an incredible collaborative effort to get this event off the ground on such short notice”.

To get everyone involved, the Bend Rock Gym hosted qualifying rounds along with a vendor village, featuring local climbing and outdoor related businesses as well as a shoe demo. Friday night brought the Grom Squad Finals, where the top five male and female 16 year and under competed for awesome prizes. Saturday evening the pro finals kicked off at Goodlife Brewing, a fitting venue given our outdoor, family friendly, beer town. The prize package was just under $20,000; quickly becoming a North American highlight for the athletes. Crafting the comp vibe were all-star setters: Joey Jansen - 2 time Setter Showdown winner, and Mike Helt - USA National Route Setter. These guys, with a full team of help, set the stage for a crowd-pleasing showcase of bouldering skills. Winning this year’s event were 2016 Canadian National Bouldering Champions Alannah Yip for the women and 2015 US National Bouldering Champion Nathianel Colemen for the men. Athletes were excited about how smooth the comp was run, the enthusiastic crowd, community support, and are already spreading the word for next year.

In 2017 year we’ll continue to build on the successes of 2016. New sponsors and athletes are already checking in. The planning stages will begin well in advance; starting with a few great ideas we had to put on hold while getting the first event off the ground. We look forward to next year.
